Cheapest Used Cars To Insure

Cheapest Used Cars To Insure

You’re looking to buy a used car - you’ve considered the price of the vehicle and the fuel - but what about insurance? Insuring your car can get costly quickly if you live in a high-risk area, are a young driver, or have points on your license. This handy guide explains it all and lists the best group 1 insurance used cars, helping you to keep costs low.

For insurance purposes, cars are divided into groups, from 1 to 50, with group 1 being the cheapest to insure. The group a particular car model fits into is usually determined by trim level and engine size and type.

This means cars under the umbrella of one model can fall into different groups depending on their specifications. For example, not all Nissan Micras will be group 1 cars but it's likely a Micra with smallest engine size will fall into the group and will be a cheap car to insure. It's worth noting that the 1 - 50 groups should be used as an indication of insurance prices. Insurers can set their own groups, although they're likely to be similar to the industry standard. This is our list of the best group 1 insurance used cars.

1. Volkswagen Polo

Almost all versions of the Polo with the 1.0-litre 79bhp petrol engine fall into this category, including the Beats audio edition with its premium stereo and connectivity. The SE, meanwhile, is equipped with all the essentials, including alloy wheels, air conditioning and all-round electric windows - and you can also enjoy niceties such as smartphone connectivity, heated power mirrors and auto headlights.

2. Vauxhall Corsa

Popular with young drivers for over a decade, the Corsa is a well-made, solid car with great fuel economy and a good choice of interior options. The price of the car is cheap as well, ranging from around £5,000 to £11,000. Combine that with group 1 insurance and you’re onto a winner.

3. Hyundai i10

The Hyundai i10 is a great small car - tiny on the outside and easy to park, but spacious enough for even five adults in the inside. Most of the 1.0-litre versions come with a group 1 insurance rating and all i10s get a five-year, unlimited mileage warranty from new – so if you buy one that’s below that age, it’ll have the remainder of that warranty left for you to enjoy.

4. Skoda Fabia

Sharing many parts with the Volkswagen Polo, the Skoda Fabia also enjoys a group 1 insurance rating on several trim levels. Even the base S model comes with electric heated door mirrors, DAB radio, remote central locking and Bluetooth phone connectivity, while SE comes with extras like rear parking sensors and air conditioning, and the Colour Edition adds a contrasting colour to the roof and mirror caps.

5. Nissan Micra

The stylish Nissan Micra’s powerful engine means you can combine great performance with low insurance costs. Not only this, but every Micra with the entry-level engine has a group 1 insurance rating, so you’ll get to pick from a range of different versions and still get the cheapest possible insurance.

6. Volkswagen Up!

Another model from the Volkswagen Group makes an appearance on this list because the Up! is also available with super-cheap group one insurance. What’s more, the high-quality materials used inside the Up! mean you won’t feel like you’re pinching pennies even while you are. Good fuel efficiency, a comfortable ride and a fun driving experience all add to the Up!’s appeal – and of course, with lower-specification versions, insurance costs are as low as you can get.

7. Ford Ka+

The Ford Ka+ was the brand’s entry-level model, based on the previous generation of Fiesta. It’s slightly taller, though, and comes with five doors as standard for excellent passenger space and access. It’s a great-value used car that costs less than most rivals and is super cheap to run. You’ll need the 1.2-litre engine with 69bhp in Studio trim (registered before August 2018) to qualify for Britain’s cheapest insurance rating.

8. Kia Rio

Fuel efficient with a diesel engine, the Kia Rio also comes with cheap insurance. From 2015 onwards, the “1 Air” model benefitted from fantastically low insurance premiums when combined with the 1.1-litre diesel engine. Of course, that remarkable fuel consumption means it’s one of the cheapest cars to run in this list, and as with all Kias the Rio has a good reputation for reliability, so you’re unlikely to have to fork out for expensive repairs further down the line.

9. Skoda Citigo

The Skoda Citigo is now electric-only, but used 59bhp petrol models manage to squeeze into the most affordable insurance group. It easily ticks all the boxes for low insurance, yet despite its 1.0-litre engine looking weedy on paper, the Citigo manages to feel nippy on all manner of roads.
