Few of us have the kind of singing voice we’d want to show off in public, and yet when it comes to driving many of us treat our cars like they are our very own stadiums; places where we can release our rock alter-egos and go for it, high notes and all.
The sense of privacy (and the ability to drive off should a fellow driver catch us belting out a power ballad) is very liberating and with the music turned up and inhibitions lowered, you can really go for it! Singing is in fact, great news for your well-being as the act of singing (even badly!) releases endorphins, the brain’s ‘feel-good chemicals. The Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy - With great guitar riffs and a catchy chorus, who of us doesn’t enjoy singing along to Thin Lizzy?
Don't Stop Me Now – Queen - To be fair, this could be pretty much any Queen song, the mix of slow and fast pacing and clever lyrics make them a perfect driving companion.
Since You Been Gone – Rainbow - With lyrics almost everyone knows, Since You’ve Been Gone lets you rock out, but with emotion!
Ace of Spades – Motorhead - A heavy metal anthem, Ace of Spades is packed with energy, making the challenge keeping up with Lemmy’s frenzied singing.
All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix - As well as providing a great opportunity for air guitar while at traffic lights, All Along the Watchtower has great lyrics (written by Bob Dylan), that every car singer can put their heart into.
Can't Stop - Red Hot Chili Peppers - With its rap-like singing, Can’t Stop is an easy song for even the most tonally challenged car singers to attempt.
Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana - Nirvana’s biggest hit, and while it is now 23 years old, it is still as fresh as it was back then. The mix of slow and fast and Cobain’s indistinct lyrics has us all channelling our inner-grunge.
Song 2 – Blur - Another one where few of us actually know the proper words, the catchy ‘woo-hoo’ hook has everybody rocking.
