Should I Fit Winter Tyres to my Land Rover? #hibernot

24th October 2014

With experts predicting the coldest winter for a century the UK is facing heavy snowfall, sub-zero temperatures and freezing winds. All of this equates to treacherous and challenging road conditions to navigate each and every day for drivers. Staying safe is the main priority any time you get into your vehicle and we look at why winter tyres can enhance your Land Rover's performance this winter.

Staying safe is the main priority any time you get into your vehicle and we look at why winter tyres can enhance your Land Rover's performance this winter.

Winter tyres not only improve your car's performance in the snow but start to take affect when the temperature drops below 7C. This is achieved through a  rubber composition consisting of a high silica content and specifically designed tread pattern allowing the tyre to maintain it's flexibility when faced with low temperatures.

The sipes (tyre tread) on the winter tyre are key as they provide extra friction against the road to generate improved grip and stability. The sipes also help mobilise the rubber allowing the softer compound rubber to cling to the road, unlike summer tyres whose solid tread block will remain rigid and therefore unable to grip the cold winter roads.

Upon fitting winter tyres you'll notice greater traction and braking control in snow, icy and very wet conditions this winter. In addition, the stopping distance is reduced by 10% compared to summer tyres on cold surfaces. Winter tyres provide you with the confidence and performance required to safely handle the roads this winter no matter what the weather throws your way.
